Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art through her aunt Denise as a young child. Aunt Denise was a nurse who worked shifts at night so that she could dedicate all daytime hours to reading, art, theater and other interests. DuVernay liked the film West Side Story, which she taught her. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was conscious of her social status and taught her how to utilize the arts to find a way of expressing herself. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and educated. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the close-by city of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to create a documentary that focused on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a student at Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. Following graduation, she went to the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was still in school. She started working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to sit at the home that one of the members of the jury and take a look at their trash. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in the field of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right after her graduation. From this position she started her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also established a range of lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
