DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma was the inspiration she used to produce a film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She then attended the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being given an assignment to watch the residence and scrutinizing the garbage of one of jurors. Her duties left her unhappy with journalism so she decided to switch careers into the publicity industry. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in an unassuming production studio after her graduation. In 1999, she launched her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
